Bulacan State University - College of Physical Education, Recreation and Sports Stallion (CoPERS) hooked the gold medal for 4x400 meter relay for both men and women and seized for the over-all championship in Athletics in the university's Intramurals 2012.

The team of Jeff Palafox, Carlos Noblefranca, Nico Magtabong and Ian Tagudan crossed the finish line with a time of 4:19:01 to lead the Men’s 4x400 meter relay, capturing the gold medal. Palafox made a huge distance early in the race by giving a full speed and never let the other team reach them. When the bar had been passed to Tagudan, the last runner for their team, other CoPERS players were already celebrating because they knew that they will win the race.

Hagonoy Campus finished second on the race as they reached the line with 4:41:99 while the bronze went to the College of Education with 4:45:00.

It was another job well done for the CoPERS Relay team as their counterpart Alyza Salmorin, Rica Joselle Reyes, Wendy Gonzaga and Joan Marangat combined for a total time of 5:47:51 to gain the gold medal in Women’s 4x400 meter Relay. As the gun shot heard, Salmorin, the first runner, ran in the oval and dictated the tempo as she made a huge gap against their rivals. After Salmorin's turn, Reyes continued to outstretch their lead but when she crossed the line and passed the bar, she quickly went down and held her ankle because of cramps. Still, they managde to win the gold. College of Education ran for their lives after they surpassed Hagonoy to get the silver. After trailing a big gap, COeD survived Hagonoy and got a better place.

The 17-year-old Ellah Mae Villaceran served as the head coach in both men and women relay and for the whole athletics team in CoPERS. She is also a Softball player.

“Sa mga player ko, sabi ko sa kanila 'manalo kayo o matalo, masaya ako kasi na-experience niyo 'yan.' Pero hindi ko naman in-expect talaga to. Sa lalaki expect ko, pero sa babae, champion pa rin kami overall," she said.

The team of women’s relay was just formed last week.

“Hindi rin nila alam na player ko sila no'n, sa babae kasi talaga ako nahirapan,” she said.

“Ang nilagay ko talaga ay 'yong first runner ko (Salmorin), athletic talaga, tapos 'yong iba hindi. Kumbaga go lang. Trust lang,” she added.

CoPERS finished the three-day athletic event in the intramurals on top with 23 golds, nine silvers and only two bronzes for men while the women listed for 20 golds in total of 43 golds, nine silver and two bronzes for the whole team, only in the Athletics event.

With this year’s theme “Tatag ng Kalooban, Liksi ng Katawan, Talas ng Isipan at Pagkakapatiran, lakas ng BulSuan sa taunang Intramurals,” athletes from 17 colleges including the satellite campuses competed in the yearly Intramurals of Bulacan State University which was held on August 27-31, 2012.

Extremely Okay

Showcasing their talent for one week, athletes from different colleges competed in different sports category which featured Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Baseball, Billiards, Chess, Cheer dance, Dance Sports, Futsal, Football, Lawn Tennis, Sepak Takraw, Softball, Swimming, Sudoku, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Volleyball, and Mr and Ms. Intramurals, including the Exhibition Game that served as the closing match for the 2012 BulSU Intramurals.

According to Mrs. Racquel Mendoza, the Dean of College of Physical Education, Recreation and Sports (CoPERS), this year’s Intramurals can be described by two words, “Extremely Okay!” .

“I’m very happy that I got a positive response from each college and satellite campuses,” she said.

Mrs. Mendoza also cited that they had a proposal for more than about Php500,000 including the officiating fee, t-shirt for the officials, foods and budget for the prizes, as well as other expenses for the whole week of celebration for the Intramurals.

CoPERS' Retrieval

Two-time defending champion, College of Industrial Technology (CIT) has been dethroned after the medal they've got just weren't enough (40 golds, 32 silvers and 37 bronzes, 109 for total). The College of Physical Education, Recreation and Sports (CoPERS) took home the overall championship after they listed for 79 golds, 33 silvers and 18 bronzes for a total of 130 medals.

As the Dean of CoPERS, Mrs. Mendoza said that their faculty didn’t prepare for coaching their players. Instead, they focused for the whole Intrams, for all the athletes, coaches and officials.

Their players were all 1st year and 2nd year students. They didn’t allow their 3rd and 4th year students to play in the Intramurals, so that they can be the officials, as a training too in case they got in a situation like that in their future.

“I encourage them to play, just to play (pertaining to their 1st year and 2nd year players). Hindi ko sinabing 'mag-champion kayo,. Ang sinabi ko sa kanila, 'gumawa kayo ng magandang laban.' Aanhin ko 'yong championship kung hindi maganda 'yong laro. Kahit ako matalo basta maganda 'yong laro ok lang,” Mendoza stated.

"The beauty of the game is not on the medal we got, it is in the performance we exhibited,” she added.

Since its establishment in 2005, the CoPERS always own the championship in the Intramurals. But for the last two years, 2010-2011 CIT dominated the Intramurals. CoPERS has now a total of five titles on their side.

Also with this Intramurals, the college can scout players who have the potential to be representatives of the university for the yearly State College Universities Athletics Association (SCUAA).

Bulacan State University - College of Industrial Technology (CIT) Stingers, the defending champion for two years, settled for rank two in the BulSU Intamurals 2012 that was successfully held on August 27 to 31.

After having a controversial victory last year over College of Physical Education, Recreation and Sports (COPERS), the Stingers let go of the titile and handed it to the Stallions. CIT should have gotten the Infinity Trophy if they were declared champion this year, but the victory ended at COPERS’s hand.

Wala kaming pagkukulang. Pinaghandaan lang talaga kami ng COPERS. Lahat ng nag-te-training (varsity) nando'n,” said Coach Raul Bernaldez, a four-year CIT Sports Coordinator and an eight-year Sepak Takraw BulSU Varsity Coach.

Meanwhile on the winners' side, the college did not expect that they will own the championship this year.

“Kami sa COPERS nagduda on winning over-all kasi karamihan ng sports hindi na pwedeng lumaro 'yong magaling sa college dahil athlete sila sa SCUAA," COPERS Basketball men coach Alvin Agulla said.

Agulla also said it was because of CIT’s controversial win last year that made the COPERS prepare so well for the event this year.

“Last year 2nd kami. Dahil maraming nagprotesta, pinaghandaan namin ngayon 'yong mga ganyang issue,” he ended.

The College of Information and Communications Technology (CICT) Firefox and Sarmiento Campus Stars both stepped up in the championship round of the Women’s Volleyball after winning their separate semi-final games against College of Education (CoEd) Torch and College of Engineering (CoE) Red Ants, respectively.

Sarmiento Campus punctuated its dominance with straight-set disposal of CICT, 25-19, 33-31 and 25-19, to grab the first place in 2012 Bulacan State University (BSU) Intramurals Women’s Volleyball at BSU activity center, August 31.

Sarmiento did not get terrified with their toughest rival, CICT.  Instead, the aggressiveness of their opponents and insult of the other team’s supporters made them become more focused and determined to win the championship fight.

The game got more intense in the second set as CICT tried to catch up after losing the first, but still, Sarmiento remained steady and firm up to the third round.

Intense trainings, teamwork and hardship are the reason for having a flawless victory, 6-0, making them the champion of this year’s volleyball competition in the women's division.

“Nagpapasalamat ako sa mga players dahil pumapayag sila na araw-araw silang mag-training.  Uma-absent nga sila minsan sa mga klase nila”, Sarmiento Campus Volleyball women coach, Lauriano Ewan said.

“Teamwork tapos nag-eensayo kami para ma-achieve ‘yong goal”, Sarmiento spiker Roxanne Arellano added.

Sarmiento campus volleyball women team and coach Ewan proudly yet humbly received their award during the awarding ceremony.

Both team featured some professors in the university but they weren't present to teach. They entered the court with the aim to win. Lady Stallion throws for the gold

Gedeona Lumague of the College of Physical Education, Recreation and Sports (COPERS) nailed the first place in the Women’s Javelin Throw beating other six contenders.

After the first three throws, she got her best effort with 24.28 meters. Officials decided to qualify all the seven throwers in the next rounds instead of the original rule wherein there will be only six players left in the 4th, 5th and 6th throws and the others will be eliminated.

In Gedeona’s first throw in the next round (4th throw), the ampire called a foul after she crossed the white line when she threw the bar but she recovered in the next two throws wherein she listed for 21.09 meters and 21.89 meters to seal the deal.

First time ko 'tong laruin sa Intrams,” Gedeona said.

Masaya kasi nanalo, hindi ko din in-e-expect kasi nga first time ko lang maglaro niyan (Javelin Throw),” she added.

Gedeona also competed in Chess and in Badminton in her high school years but in her first year of college taking Bachelor of Physical Education in Bulacan State University she tried her luck in Javelin and it worked.

CIT, pitched Men’s Javelin

College of Industrial Technology (CIT) representative in Men’s Javelin Throw Patrick Lazaro pinned the gold medal after registering a high 35.88 meters throw in his last attempt to bag the gold.

Lazaro qualified for the next round after his record of 33.80 meters in the first three throws. His rival Bustos’ pride Joseph Matic finished at the second place. In the next round this two contenders were going neck-to-neck but both Lazaro and Matic failed to get a high result after a 22.28 meter for Matic and 29.02 for Lazaro. Lazaro continued to struggle in the fifth throw tallying his lowest output in the game with 27.07 while Matic gained momentum after he knocked 30.80 meters. Lazaro boost himself when he rolled the best throw in the game with 35.88 meters to close out the game, while Matic fell short with 32.52 meters.

CoPERS, soar high

Jeff Palafox collected another gold through his individual award in Men’s High Jump after he listed for 1.60 meter that made him the number one in the game.

After he won gold in men’s 4x400 meter relay, he grabbed for another personal achievement here in 2012 Intramurals.

“Thank you kasi nanalo ako, thank you kay God,” said Palafox.

Palafox has been competing since 4th year high school in high jump and with his ability he was able to compete in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Golden Gift

As Rica Joselle Reyes of College of Physical Education, Recreation and Sports (COPERS) turned 17, she gave a wonderful present for herself when she earned gold in Women’s Long Jump.

“Sobrang saya ko, lalo na parang 'yon na po 'yong gift ni God sakin, parang sobrang blessed na blessed po ako. 'Yun 'yong pinakamagandang gift na natanggap ko sa birthday ko, 'yong manalo ng first sa long jump,” Reyes said.

“Wala ng mas gaganda pang gift na pwedeng ibigay sa akin maliban doon,” she added.

Reyes dominated the game by putting up her best record in the first round for 3.95 meter distance and ending up the game with a high note and sustaining her record as her best effort in the game.

Reyes is one of the varsity players in BSU in basketball girls but she said that in athletics, she never planned to join the varsity.

Pang Intrams lang ang Athletics,” she cited.

Reyes also won five golds from winning in the 1500 meter run, 400 meter run, 4x400 meter relay, classical relay and including this long jump.

CoPERS, engineered relay

College of Physical Education, Recreation and Sports (COPERS) dominated the 4x400 meter relay for both men and women.

CoPERS male runners are the first to track the oval as they finished the race with the time of 4:19:01. Jeff Palafox, Carlos Noblefranca, Nico Magtabong and Ian Tagudan got the gold in the Men’s 4x400 meter relay while Alyza Salmorin, Rica Joselle Reyes, Wendy Gonzaga and Joan Marangat represented CoPERS to compete in the Women’s 4x400 meter relay. They finished the race with 5:47:51, enough to get the gold.

CoPERS, tops Athletics

The College of Physical Education, Recreation and Sports prevailed in proving that they still have the guts to be the best in Athletics.

Sarmiento Campus got the second place as they got four golds, 4 silvers and five bronzes in both men and women division. Bustos Campus hanged in the third as they recorded for two golds, one silver and two bronzes.
